En 1952, une série de suspensions suédoises fut lancée sur le marché américain, et George Nelson fut suffisamment impressionné pour en vouloir une pour son bureau. Leur prix élevé l'en dissuada, mais l'incita à concevoir la sienne. Il en résulta une série de lampes aux formes sphériques et élémentaires, comme une pomme arrondie, un cigare allongé et une poire galbée, entre autres.
