L'applique da parete Ball è progettata con una cerniera girevole e un cavo di alimentazione regolabile, che consente di spostare facilmente il paralume senza doverlo riposizionare sulla parete. Nel 1952, una serie di lampade a sospensione svedesi fu introdotta sul mercato americano e George Nelson ne fu così colpito da volerne una per il suo ufficio. Il loro prezzo elevato gli impedì di acquistarne una, ma lo ispirò anche a progettarne una propria. Il risultato fu una serie di lampade dalle forme sferiche elementari, come una mela arrotondata, un sigaro allungato e una pera ben tornita, tra le altre.
